Checkpoint

A designated stop along a race course where mushers must check in, rest their dog teams, and where veterinarians perform mandatory health examinations on every dog before the team is cleared to continue.

A checkpoint is a pre-determined location along a sled dog racing course that serves as a logistical and safety hub during a race. Every musher is required to stop and check in at each checkpoint, where race officials record arrival and departure times.

Veterinarians stationed at checkpoints perform thorough examinations of every dog in the team, checking for signs of fatigue, dehydration, lameness, or other health concerns. Dogs that are deemed unfit to continue are removed from the team and cared for at the checkpoint until they can be transported safely.

Checkpoints also serve as resupply points where mushers pick up pre-shipped food and gear bags. In longer races like the Iditarod or Yukon Quest, mandatory rest periods must be taken at designated checkpoints, ensuring both mushers and dogs get adequate recovery time before continuing down the trail.
