Canicross

The sport of cross-country running with a dog attached to the runner via a bungee line and waist belt, where the dog pulls from the front while the runner maintains pace behind over varied terrain.

Canicross is a dog sport that pairs a runner with one dog, connected by a bungee line clipped to a hands-free waist belt on the runner and a pulling harness on the dog. The dog runs ahead and provides forward pull, while the runner matches the pace and steers through voice commands.

Originally developed in Europe as off-season training for sled dog teams, canicross has grown into a competitive discipline in its own right. Races are typically held on trail or cross-country courses ranging from 2 to 10 kilometers. Because it requires minimal equipment — just a belt, bungee line, and harness — it is one of the easiest mushing sports to get started with.

Canicross is practiced year-round in cooler climates, though temperature limits are enforced at most organized events to protect the dogs from overheating. Nearly any breed with the drive to run and pull can participate, making it popular beyond the traditional sled dog community. It also serves as excellent physical conditioning for both dog and handler.
