H-Back Harness

A pulling harness with a horizontal strap connecting two parallel side straps across the dog's back, providing a shorter and gentler fit than an x-back harness, ideal for dogs with back sensitivities.

The h-back harness is a popular alternative to the x-back harness in sled dog sports. Its design features two parallel straps running along each side of the dog’s body, connected by a horizontal strap across the mid-back, forming an H-shape when viewed from above. The tugline attaches at the end of the back section, which typically stops at or just past the dog’s hips.

Because the h-back harness is shorter and does not extend as far down the dog’s body, it places less pressure on the lower back and spine. This makes it an excellent choice for dogs that have back issues, a shorter body type, or a tendency to run with an arched back. It is also commonly used in dryland sports like canicross, bikejoring, and scootering where extreme pulling force is less critical.

While the h-back does not distribute force quite as efficiently as the x-back for heavy pulling, many mushers find it more versatile. Some teams use a mix of both harness types, selecting the right style for each individual dog based on build, running style, and comfort.
